Schools for the Dalit Children

Since the inception of the school ministry in 2001, there are now 66 Education Centres in strategic rural areas of India.

As a starting point, the schools are started in rented facilities until such time as funds become available to move ahead with permanent school buidings.

Each Dalit Education Centre is generally constructed on a two acre lot according to a uniform plan providing classrooms for generally Kindergarten to Grade 5 on the main floor.  As the schools grow and upper grades are required, a second level is added.  The schools provide education to the Grade 10 level, which is the India standard for middle school education, after which students then move on to a Junior college or technical training.

The significance of these Dalit schools are that they are often the only English medium schools located in the rural areas of India.  Not only are they a source of education for the children but provide a training facility for the adults as well.  The schools have become lighthouses of hope in the rural communities of India.
