With the art auction only two weeks away, we are starting to collect all the pieces from our local artists. The first piece submitted is this 36" x 24" painting by Rebecca Hill, a first-time contributor to HeART for Dalits.
In this piece, Rebecca tried to capture the juxtaposition of loveliness and squalor that characterizes India. The peacock, India's national emblem, is a symbol of beauty, grace, and pride; however, India's 250 million Dalits are denied access to these very things. This contrast, between India portrayed and India experienced, inspired Rebecca to paint the famed bird in a slum street. Her piece invites us to consider the multiple, conflicting, coexisting realities of life in such a diverse country.
Rebecca's painting will be available for auction on Friday, July 22, along with pieces from nearly 30 other local artists. We will continue to feature different contributing artists as they submit their pieces in the weeks to come.
