Learn more about this Program Program: School Equipment

Every village school requires basic amenities such as wells, electric generators, desks and educational materials. As the school construction comes to completion, it is still not ready for the students or teachers. Basic equipment and teaching tools are needed that enable these children to receive quality education and allow the teachers to effectively equip the children. Many schools have the children sitting on the floor because desks are not afforded.

Project Goal:  $13,350 to provide 15 computers for classrooms. Computers are purchased in India for $890 for each computer.

Nearly all the Good Shepherd Schools have computer literacy classes and eight of them have computer training for adults.

The goal of the computer classes is to both train the students and also local Dalit people in basic computer skills so they can get a job in word processing, graphic design or as an office worker. These are reliable vocations available for both men and women that pay a decent wage, thereby bringing immediate help and transformation to Dalit families.

Those with advanced computer skills can secure loans to buy computer equipment and set up their own desktop publishing business or other computer services.

Funds Raised: $645.00 CAD
Goal: $890.00 CAD
Percentage of goal: 72 %

THIS WAS A REAL SURPISE!  On a recent trip to India I was amazed to see that the caste system is still very much in existence.  The situation for Dalits was particularly something that I was continually amazed to learn was still a serious issue for over 250,000,000 individuals in India.  One major help for the Dalits is education and I would like to challenge those in my network of friends to raise the funds to purchase a computer for a school that has been established to educate Dalit children.  It does not take much imagination to think about what an incredible difference this could make in a child's life.

    Coffee with the Board Chair

Had an interesting time this afternoon having coffee with the Chair of the Board for Dalit Freedmon Network Canada (DFN)...Dr. Greg Hislop.  Greg has been to India 6 times over the last few years and like me, after his first trip to India was amazed that the caste system is still a very significant issue in India.  He has a tremendous passion to do something meaningful to help those who are living life at the lowest level of survival. He is devoting  a good portiion of his time to DFN now that he is recently retired and looks forward to making another trip to India in 2010.  Spending a few minutes with Greg you cannot help but catch some of his desire to help make a difference, particularly in the lives of Dalit children.  He is really encouraged by the growing steps that have been taken by DFN Canada to address the needs of over 250 million individuals who have been classified as "untouchables" in India. I am pleased to be able to help him and DFN....
