The Musahars of India are some of the most marginalized people in the world today. The Musahar people are also called ‘rat eaters’ because in their poverty they hunt and eat field rats. Described as the Dalits of the Dalits, Musahars face daily discrimination and abuse. They live in extreme poverty - separated from the rest of society so that they do not contaminate others with their presence. Less than 3% are literate and over 90% are landless labourers.
Education is freedom for the Musahar. Dalit Freedom Network is giving Musahar children the opportunity to attend school because we know that education can break cycle of poverty and discrimination for these children and their families.
