About Me

Rachel Silver pic I first heard about the Dalits two years ago. I heard the story about the clay cups, and how the Dalits had to smash them after they drank from them, to keep from contaminating others. I heard about how they are so downtrodden, so marginalized, that they have no feeling of self worth, and feel like they deserve to do the most disgusting degrading jobs in their societies. And I was angry, that this could be happening in the world, in my world. It felt so far away, I felt so helpless.

250 million Dalits. 250 million? This just seemed like a number to me for a long time, but when I went to India last summer to work with DFN, and looked into the eyes of so many beautiful Dalit children, this number resonated, shook me up, and broke my heart. So go ahead, think about it. It's two hundred and fifty million real live breathing people, walking around India right now, living in a life of bondage. So many are uneducated, living in squalor, and trapped inside the caste system being judged as Untouchable though their only fault is being born to Dalit parents.

They deserve more. They DESERVE more! And we have so many resources, and our money and support goes such a long way. What I love about DFN is that it's Indians that are building schools and educating children, and only Indians can change India. But we can provide the finances, we can tell their story.

And so I'm committed to telling their story, and to fundraising to put more Dalit children in school, so that they can be healthy, learn that they have self-worth, and become advocates for change in their own country. No one deserves to be untouchable... Let's free the Dalits!
