About Me

Nate Lepp pic Three months ago, I didn't even know the Dalit people existed. Turns out there's 250 million of them (that's one quarter of the population of India and the equivalent of the entire population of the U.S.). You'd think a people group with representation this significant would get some recognition in the world's largest democracy, but the Dalits are getting the blunt end of a very short stick.

By giving Dalits access to education, DFN and other charities like it are offering hope that even the most vicious cycles can be broken. As someone with more education than I know what to do with, I've been extremely lucky. Some of you know already about my efforts to promote literacy in East Africa, and this is a natural extension of that passion in a different location.

The word 'Dalit' means 'ground', 'suppressed', 'crushed', or 'broken to pieces'. This is, to say the least, a heavy name to bear.

Much better is Ghandi's term 'Harijan', which roughly means 'Children of God'.
